Engineers tested two parachute packing techniques in the world’s largest wind tunnel at NASA’s Ames Research Center. They loaded each chute into a cannon and aimed it down the middle of the tunnel. They then fired the cannon — horizontally — at 85 mph and let the parachute fly. 2009/03/31 - 04:43 PM

Someday all this mess will make me laugh, I can’t wait, I can’t wait.
"It’s disorienting to spend a lifetime hearing the praises of consuming less — and then, with the economic collapse, being forced to do so. (…) We’ve finally spiked over the edge of the chart — we’re at the place we couldn’t see in social studies classes, when late 20th-century trends like population and raw material consumption and pension indexes were extrapolated along the x- and y- axes into infinity. In my mind we were never really in the future until we hit that edge — and now we have — and because of this, everything we sense in 2009 is going to be new, but that’s what the future was always supposed to be about."via NYTimes

"The estranged wife of United Technologies Chairman George David says she has weekly expenses of $53,000. (…) The 33 year old has no job, no assets and must depend on the largess of her 66-year-old hubby for her well-being. At a hearing this week in Hartford Superior Court, he agreed to pay her $978,000 until their legal teams work out the terms of their divorce, including whether a $43 million post-nup she signed is still valid. (...) So how does Douglas-David, manage to spend $53,000 a week? Mortgage and maintenance fees and rent for the Park Avenue penthouse, the Hamptons retreat and properties in Sweden account for $27,300 a week, according to a financial affidavit she filed with the court. And then there’s travel ($8,000), clothing ($4,500), a personal assistant ($2,209), horse care ($1,570), domestic help ($1,480), entertainment and restaurants ($1,500), health and skin care ($1,000), dry cleaning ($650), flowers ($600) and a trainer ($250). And it must be noted that Douglas-David is cutting back." 2009/03/29 - 10:09 AM
